Bulls Gap Railroad Museum Information:
Bulls Gap Railroad Museum and Community Development Corporation is a non-profit 501c3 organization.. We are dedicated to preserve the history of the Bulls Gap, Tn. railroad community and the towns people and to make improvements in the community.
In 2003, James Walls a member of the community and the Railroad Museum group donated two buildings that he owned in the historic district of Bulls Gap. One was the Gilley Apartments and the 2nd was the Gilley's Hotel building. James was retired from a company in California that worked on one of the early satellite programs for the United States. In the 1980's he and two others bought these two buildings as business partners. Eventually James bought them out. He rented out apartments for many years until he had to close them down due to not being able to upkeep the buildings.
In 2003 he was 71 years old and ready to retire again and move to his home state of South Carolina. He knew that he could not continue the upkeep of both buildings and he had the same dreams of our group, to see the buildings restored and used again. He liked the idea of the Railroad Museum being put into the Hotel.
Since then, our group has restored the Gilley apartments with a grant through the city of Bulls Gap and the State. We use the rental income to make improvements on the hotel. We just recently put a new roof on the hotel to keep the building from falling in due to rainy weather. Our next project will be structure work and new windows. We hope to apply for a matching Transportation grant through the Tennessee Department of Transportation. Proceeds from this auction of items that came out of the hotel will be used for the building fund for the hotel, and to help us attain our goal of getting this grant. More history and information about our group can be found on the web-site http://www.bullsgaprailroadmuseum.org.
